Special Needs Experience

I have a bachelor of science degree in professional Children and Young People’s Nursing, obtained from Queen’s University in Belfast (Ireland). Throughout this degree, I specialised in caring for high dependency children and young people including those with long term needs. I have also worked as a personal care assistant for children with complex needs including cerebral palsy, epilepsy and autism. I have a wide experience in enteral feeding, medication management, manual handling techniques and personal care. I also have experience with specialised communication techniques including makaton.

Childcare Experience

I studied a bachelor of science degree in professional nursing for Children and Young People. I studied at Queen’s University Belfast for 3 years and I qualified as a nurse in October 2022. Since then I have worked in the Royal Victoria Hospital for sick children in Belfast. I worked as a full time registered nurse in a 22 bedded general/ respiratory ward. Throughout this time I cared for multiple children, including those with complex needs. The ward in which I worked cared for children aged 0-17 so I am comfortable working with children between these ages. I also worked as a personal care assistant for a family at home in Ireland who had children that required specialised care and attention, such as medication management, enteral feeding and certain communication techniques. Although I have a lot of experience in caring for children with complex needs, I am also really passionate about generally making a positive impact on a child’s personal development. This can be achieved by assisting with school work, reading and engaging in playful activities that the children enjoy. I am also very happy to help with domestic tasks as required and did this when working for a family as a nanny in Ireland. I learnt to adapt to their lifestyle and ensured to cook, clean, be responsible for bath time and run personal errands to make their life easier where possible. Coming from a large family in Ireland, I have always been surrounded by younger children (and pets!). It is the environment in which I am most comfortable and I’d love the opportunity to make a difference to the family life of someone here in Sydney.
